About LaJuana Johnson | Leadership Development Rooted in Liberation, Love & Legacy

A Legacy of Leadership and Liberation

I was born in Tucson, Arizona — but my story begins in Tulsa, the home of Black Wall Street, through my mother’s eyes.

When she was twelve years old, she made a decision that would define her life:
she refused to sit in the back of the bus.
She drank from any water fountain.
She walked into white-only restrooms.

She knew the risks — but she did it anyway.
Her courage taught me that leadership isn’t about titles or applause — it’s about conviction.

She showed me that freedom isn’t granted, it’s practiced, and that love is not weakness — it’s the fiercest leadership strategy of all.

Even at eighty, during the height of COVID, when I hesitated to protest, she reached across generations, grabbed my arm, and said:

“LaJuana, you have to be willing to die for what you believe in.”

That moment reminded me that the purpose of living is not safety — it’s significance.
My story begins with hers because she gave me the fire to fight for what I believe in.

If you’re ready to transform how you lead — you’re in the right place.

From Leading Organizations to Building Leaders

With over 25 years of experience in leadership development, organizational consulting, and executive coaching, I’ve witnessed both the brilliance and the breaking point of leadership.

I’ve watched Black leaders do extraordinary work while carrying invisible weight — holding missions together with limited resources, navigating boards that didn’t always understand them, and leading with integrity even when support was scarce.

I’ve been that leader — the one brought in to rebuild what was broken, to restore trust, and to steady organizations standing on shaky ground.
I’ve stood at the intersection of boardrooms and communities, holding both vision and exhaustion in the same hands.

And yet, even in the hardest seasons, I’ve seen something sacred — the quiet strength and resilience of Black leadership that refuses to give up.

Building an Ecosystem of Liberation-Centered Leadership

From BELA, an ecosystem was born:

Lunch with LaJuana Live

Conversations that refuel the soul of leadership.

Dear Black Leader

A weekly letter to the heart of leadership.

Love Black People

A movement turning love into strategy and structure.

BlackLeader.AI

A new frontier in AI-powered leadership and board training.

Each offering shares one heartbeat: that leadership can be liberating, not depleting.

At LaJuana Johnson Leadership & Development, we are redefining executive leadership, board governance, and organizational development through a lens of love, equity, and liberation.

Because when Black leaders thrive, entire communities rise.
And when love leads, everything that follows can finally be free.

The Birth of BELA: The Black Executive Leadership Academy

In 2024, two years after losing my mother and learning to breathe again, I asked myself a single question:

“What impact do I want to make with the rest of my life?”

The answer was clear — I wanted to support the people who sustain so much with so little.

That clarity birthed the Black Executive Leadership Academy (BELA) — a sanctuary and a strategy for Black nonprofit executives and emerging leaders committed to equity, liberation, and transformation.

BELA began as a seed of hope and has grown into a movement — a cornerstone of leadership development for those doing extraordinary work with extraordinary grace.

It became more than a program — it became a home.

Be Bold. Be You. Lead Like You Belong.
